A fold of tissue surrounding the opening of the larynx and extending beneath the epiglottis is called the aryepiglottic fold. Occasionally, the fold flips over the tip of the epiglottis, entrapping it. This condition, known as epiglottic entrapment, causes inflammation and irritation of the pharynx and larynx, which can reduce performance in athletes.
